Can you imagine the nightmare of someone stealing your entire house?
The good news is that it sounds like both victims are usually made right as far as the house goes. AKA, both parties usually get most of their money back if there's title insurance (and presumably the original owners keep their home). The horrible news, I suspect is that all of the original owners stuff that was in the house is probably gone forever. I assume the fraudsters may use some furniture to stage, but then once the house is sold, I assume they clear everything out including sentimental items, and that stuff probably goes to a landfill somewhere. Furniture is largely replaceable. Sentimental stuff is generally not.
