Just did this. We used some three part "system" that Home Depot sells. The final piece is a polish I believe - my wife did this so I can call ignorance. But, it is VERY slick after. My espresso machine moves when I twist on the portafilter.
We did this mostly to restore shine.
No idea if there is a stain.
