I can't help but think "carter" is an autocorrect for "cracked part".

In '84 I ran over a piece of exhaust which fell off the car ahead. It tumbled and struck the diesel fuel tank on my Rabbit. We were headed for the ferry and just before we boarded, I advised the loadmaster we had a leak. He said " No problem. Just identify your car to the deck crew. "
One of the crew grabbed a square of cardboard and a bar of Ivory soap. Lying on the cardboard, he reached under and rubbed the soap on the weeping fissure in the front of the tank and the leak stopped. It took a month before the replacement tank could be installed but it never leaked a drop in that time.
