Land Rover coolant misery
The teach your kids to wrench thread has brought up some not so pleasant memories. We have a 2010 Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4 in USA but I refuse). In the past 20+ months we have replaced:
Radiator
water pump
coolant crossover under intake plenum
a few bits and bobs
Next issue was on trip to Colorado this past summer:
Expansion tank began to leak at mouth
New tank and cap installed overnighted to CO for the drive back to Texas
2 weeks ago:
Rear coolant flange between firewall and rear of engine. I had the indy mechanic do it as I just don't have the time right now and they did engine mounts at same time which I wasn't about to tackle.
Yesterday evening after walking the dogs I noticed coolant on ground by driver's rear tire. Upon some inspection and research I discovered the leak's general origin and that the vehicle not only has A/C in the rear but also heater core. So there are pipes like a 996 from front to rear with coolant, news to me.
I spoke with Indy mechanic today and he confirmed my suspicion: when they fix some coolant issues it causes the system to get back up to pressure and often it finds the next weakest link which in turn craps out.
Seems to me they should have used that logic to just say, lets go over all known failure points and get your vehicle right vice piecemealing it over time.
Just for sympathy's sake, I drove 3 hours each way a couple of Saturdays ago to help my son. His 20 year old Land Rover Disco II wouldn't start. Top tip: when you put in a new battery ensure that you connect the cables properly to the battery terminals. When I opened the battery box I could see daylight between the battery cable connector and the terminal. I spared him from the embarrassment with his roommates by saying I didn't know what it was but it starts now.
