Remember this is an enthusiast-centric forum. Most people have no clue about the basics of maintenance. Yes, that’s on them but modern cars are much too complex for shade tree mechanics.
Even older cars, 20-30 year old cars are complex pieces of equipment. Couple that with the frustrations that come with working on cars that are a collection of sub assemblies, repairs get expensive, quick.
One of the actuators on my Jeep failed. Fairly common failure because of plastic gears. The actuator is about 3 inches off the side of that car, behind a speaker grill that doesn’t come out.
You have to remove the passenger seat and work on your back to change a $30 part. The dealer will charge about $900 for the repair. My solution was to unplug it and go without the recirculating feature of the HVAC system.
