Difficult decisions…. When I rebuilt the 3.0 motor on my SC targa recently, I went with SSI’s and needed to backdate the exhaust. To save some $$, I found a good used Dansk “OEM” style 2in 1out muffler with a 60mm outlet and figured it would be a safe (quiet) starting place and I could upgrade to some sort of sport muffler someday in the future. I ran the Dansk for nearly 1,000 miles and realized it is a LOT louder than I had expected. Sometimes I loved the sound. But for open top driving around town (especially with my wife in passenger seat) the Dansk was annoyingly loud. Even just running down residential streets in second gear at 2,000 rpm or so, it was amazingly noisy. Just this week I took the Dansk off and installed an original Bischoff from a 2.7 car (date code 1977, with the EGR port welded shut). The engine is MUCH quieter but still sounds great to my ears. A lot of the wonderful “machinery” kinds of sounds that a 911 engine makes are more at the forefront and not drowned away by the sound coming from the muffler. I’ll probably miss the Dansk sounds sometimes and/or will wonder what a lot of new muffler options sound like. But for now I am pleased with the SSI/Bishoff combination. I guess the moral of this story is that you might consider keeping your original Bishoff, in case you might ever decide to go back to it.
