In the US, verbal contracts are not enforceable if they are over $500. This is a great example of why that rule exists.
Run, don't walk away. Or as others have said, if he is truly a friend just be honest about it with him. The fact that he previously said: "no, I don't want to ruing a friendship because of a problematic vehicle that I'd sell you" makes me believe he would understand if you backed out.
