I've had Clearplex on my Lotus windshield for years, with 100+ track days and it's been invaluable.
On 911s, I don't think it's as much about windshield availability, as it is about preserving an existing known good / leak free install. The whole windshield install thing has become more art than science, including sourcing the right seal and searching out the local shaman, I mean installer.
