Connecting my charger/maintainer while the battery was disconnected is how I changed my battery. I've had no issues that I am aware of.
Other precautions:
Standing in the trunk while lifting and pivoting with a 50 pound weight on your back can be physically demanding, but it is the only way to do it. Be aware of the physics involved and plan how you will lift, rotate and lower the battery. I lifted the battery up and paused with it on top of the spare tire; then lifted, rotated and lowered it into the bottom of the trunk. Then I stepped out of the trunk and lifted the battery up and out. Installed the new one by reversing the steps.
For those of us who don't lift weights, this is a great way to pull a back muscle or pop a disk, so do it carefully.
