Here is the reply from my uncle regarding if an F 105 could maintain supersonic flight without an afterburner . . .
You are correct. You could get to supersonic in the Hun (F-100) but pulling it out of burner made it decelerate to subsonic. That ability of the Thud was our famous Mig avoidance maneuver. They couldn't pull the burner out unless slowing to subsonic or the engine would quit!
