In my experience "BMW things" are cooling system issues (redo every 75K end to end), rod bearings (E46-E9x), turbos (after that), Fuel pumps, ECUs, screeching fans, depends on the years really. If fastidiously maintained they are pretty good cars... More labor intensive than Porsches of similar eras in my experience. Modern ones can be more annoying to shadetree fix because of the interconnected modules / encryption. I'm sticking iwth my 1973 2002 and E46 M3. That's my upper limit.
