As my grandparents house they had a milkman. The back door was never locked, he just walked in, put the milk, butter or cream in the fridge, and picked up the empties. Grandma would have a note stuck in the neck of one bottle to indicate what she needed for the next delivery.
They also had Frank, the egg delivery man. He to just walked in, and filled up the egg bin with farm fresh eggs and left a receipt.
Both grandmothers shopped at Kamp's grocery store. Just pick up what you need, the check out lady was friendly greeted he by her name, and asked about the family, and she went to the same church. No ID needed, no cash or check exchanged, it was just put on the account and they paid monthly what was due.
