In Norfolk, the Norfolk Drive-In was right across the road (Va. Bch. Blvd.) from our neighborhood (Fairlawn Estates) and we could see much of the screen from our bicycles outside the side fence. Came in handy for those R-rated movies....lol.
I do remember going there with the family on numerous occasions including seeing "The Green Berets" with John Wayne when it first came out and my Dad was still alive....

At our household, we would get home from school, and the neighborhood boys would meet up and go off playing on bikes. I had to be home at 6:30 for dinner, then gone until the street lights came on. I was pretty good at walking in the door as the street light came on, not before.
