In Norfolk, the Norfolk Drive-In was right across the road (Va. Bch. Blvd.) from our neighborhood (Fairlawn Estates) and we could see much of the screen from our bicycles outside the side fence. Came in handy for those R-rated movies....lol.
I do remember going there with the family on numerous occasions including seeing "The Green Berets" with John Wayne when it first came out and my Dad was still alive....

Baz, I grew up in Portsmouth, so I do remember some of the same things, even though I guess I'm a bit younger than you (62). I remember seeing Walt Disney's Fantasia at what seemed like a humongous modern movie theater over near Pembroke area.
Used to stay out until we heard the 9 o'clock gun. That was from the Marine Barracks at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
