Depending on the state, and most of them allow private party transfers between residents of the same state, ATF would have nothing to say about it. I can see how the storage facility owner may not want to know what's in there or get involved. But if I buy an abandoned storage unit at auction in AZ where I live, and I find guns in the unit - they are then
my guns. Anything they were involved in prior to coming into my possession isn't my problem. If it's an NFA item, then I have to jump through some hoops to legally keep them. But I'm under no obligation to even attempt to ascertain something is not stolen, especially if I'm not reselling it.
