I bought a used transit for $150. I trust it completely. It's great for landscaping and construction. No batteries, easy to setup and use, I can leave it outside with a garbage bag over it, and if I'm creative I can use it without a helper. It's easily within 1/32" over a long distance.

Anything else, I use my German 48" level from Lee Valley.

What's nice about the laser levels (I don't have one) is that if you wanted to hang several photos on a wall or around a room all at the same level, you know that everything on that line would be. If you wanted to hang several photos diagonally down a staircase but in a row, you can do that (many/most have that capability). If you had a room stripped to the studs to and wanted all light switches or outlets at the same level all around the room, they would be. The ability to be consistent and uniform is nice.

I have Stabila 4' & 18" levels as well as an old 2' of some other brand that checks with the Stabilas.
