FYI: 356 Registry has tons of info on things like this. Worth a look. My memory from way back is that the Speedsters were almost all equipped with BBAB gear sets. My first one [when they were just lightweight performance Porsches for crazy people] really surprised me at how the gears transformed acceleration. Great fun.
Addendum: See that clutch arm sticking out from the side/top? That design [I'm being generous with the word "design" as well as the concept of engineering.... That was why "real" Speedster folks always carried a spare clutch cable up front. Hysterical, as if designed to see how quickly the end would break off. Now the biggest joke: Since there wasn't always an opportunity for a quick cable change you learned to drive clutchless. Once you thought it out it was actually rather simple and fun. Needing to come to a complete stop you threw it in neutral, shut down the engine, put it in 1st gear, then waited to "go". At that point you merely pushed the starter button [early Speedster] and passengers were amazed at how smooth the process was. It also gave an education in delicate shifting gears and a few other driving tricks that made it easier for me years later when I [couldn't afford to but screw it-] went SCCA racing. Enough from old foggie.
Great upgrade for an early 356 coupe if you enjoy keeping up with traffic.
