Okay, I'm not crazy then.

I just couldn't imagine how stripping the plating could have any actual benefit. He did keep going on about the primer, and how "there might be something new, but this is the product we know"

It's a real bummer. I'd been in the guys shop about a week earlier when he was out, and an employee gave me a tour. They really do some beautiful restoration work, but it sounds like it wouldn't hold up in my use scenario.

Edit to add: The paint on the car now isn't peeling, but it has some scratches and chips from poor handling for the last few decades living as a roller since the last paint job, from which it's still mostly stripped. I want to go back to the factory color instead of the eggplant purple it is now, and figured the best time would be while the car was still mostly disassembled.
