The real tragedy of the ever increasing and unrealistic [IMO] cost of renovating these cars is that most will be owned by those who choose to keep these cars as garage queens and not be used and driven enthusiastically as Porsche originally intended.
After being a member here since 2007, and over that time reading many posts concerning the cost of repairing and re-building all aspects of these cars I have to say that it truly saddens me that these cars will no longer be within the reach of ordinary working folk like myself and dare I say many of you here, and thus the thrill of driving these exceptional machines will likely only be experienced by those privileged with deep pockets.
I have worked and been involved in all aspects of the motor trade since I was very young, including many years in motorsport, and have participated in building new cars for rally, and tarmac, so I do have experience of what it takes, and the realistic costs involved in producing and maintaining these cars.
The story behind why I own an air cooled 911 is very short and possibly very similar to many here; when I was around 12 years old [quite a while ago now] I remember being at school when a teacher pulled up in one of these cars, first it was the sound, and then the sight of this car in comparison to all the other mundane cars in the car park just blew me away, and although at the age of 12, and coming from a relatively poor background I never envisaged being able to ever own one then, however; that image stayed with me long into adulthood.
I guess what I am trying to say is this, these cars like many other brands of their ilk need to stay within the reach of those who appreciate them most i.e.; those who are going to drive them, maintain them, and above all enjoy them for what they are; an exceptional and thrilling driving machine, ie; enthusiasts, and not just as an investment.
I apologise in advance to the original poster if they feel my post here has in any way detracted from their original thread.
