There's no secret the dept I'm in for my terminal degree is mismanaged. The undergrads and summer research kids are getting a 1099 nec for national science foundation grants that should not be taxed. The uni refuses to fix the issue. The kids tax accountants are demanding a 1099 misc or just a w2 from the dept or finance from the university. No one wants to budge and
I want my undergrad minions back(the kids don't want to come back if they're going to be taxed a grand on a 6,000 stipend)... This is technically my PI's problem, but he's green card and has no idea nor wants to cause waves to a very inept/ green chair that only shows up 2 days a week. The dept office secretary shows up once a week and said to pound sand. The payroll from the university said it's correct. How to tackle this problem?
