Yea, one of the programs we have used, and still do use in on a month by month basis just has a "fuser" model. With lots of RAM and a fast CPU, it will split the tasks into several fusers, and them any computer on the network with a fuser node installed can pile on. It just cost more money for each fuser. We had a client that wanted 3D data done in a very short time frame. We just had the company that sells the program run the project, and they can just throw a few hundred fusers on the project and pump it out in short order for a large hunk of cash. Our client paid them directly, and we just got the flying part of it.

My current program uses the video cards GPU for a lot of the work. It wants lots of CUDA cores. My two cards work together to give it lots of CUDA cores, and I have lots of RAM memory and the hard drives ar the M.2 drives and just a SSD plugged directly to the motherboard bus.

Most of our good projects are just an Orthophoto, with a parametric and TOPO map overlay and the 3D image is not needed.
