When we lived in Hawaii in the 1960s dad bought a local car an old 40s Mercury. The key had been wired around and all anyone had to do was get in and step on the starter button on the floor. The ignition looked normal, and most anyone assumed it needed a key. It helped to be a old rusty hooptie that could only go 45 MPH. Of course that was long before the "interstate" highway and the max speed limit was 45 on the island. It would really struggle to get over the old Pali highway at all. He said it was great to not have to carry keys for it. He sold it for 50 bucks more than he paid for it, because he had to put new tires on it.
