We had a really nice weekday trip to Muir woods a few years ago. Yes it is very crowded and you can expect to walk 20-30 minutes to entrance if you drive in. There are shuttles spread throughout the area that you can use but again the lines are long. There are some trails that take you up to the top of the ridge line that I highly recommend.
