I rode without a "Dashboard" for years. All the guys swear by them, distances, speed and they talk on the computer through it. I had an old Avocet speedo 30 years ago only to tear it off after couple weeks. I am no longer racing so what's the use of looking at data. I do like a heart rate monitor. Begin saying for years now, still haven't gotten around to getting one. I ride by feel. I know my gearing and my spin will determine my speed. I can bang out the same speed to within a mile or two for 20 miles doing tempo. I remember when those things became popular mounting it on top of the bars. Once I broke off with three others on our training ride, not because we were fast but we shot a yellow light. We tried like hell to stay away knowing there's 15 miles to the finish. Once we turned onto a hill, one guys sat up and stopping pedaling. Myself and another guy were pissed as we went around him. I asked,"what the hell you sit up for?" He pointed at his monitor and said he's past his threshold. The guys on my wheel yells, and sees that's he did not look tired, complains that he needed to pull through for a successful break. I agree, he did not look, sound tired or out of breath. I always say, ride until you hurt like hell and keep going until you almost puke. That's just about right.
