In 1911 when you wanted to travel in snow, you improvised! Here we see Arthur Foote and crew wrapping a large rope around the tires during the annual Tahoe Tavern Challenge. The "challenge" was to see who would be the first across the Summit in Spring. The event ended at the Tahoe Tavern in Tahoe City. This was long before the state began plowing roads, so seeing who could cross first was a real challenge. Arthur and his team won the three-foot-tall silver trophy.
