My wife had an uncle with addiction problems.
When he got a meaningful (not massive) inheritance, he enjoyed being generous.
Very generous.
He had never had the means to gift to those important to him, even simple things like taking family out for a nice dinner.
Though he never invested for future growth, the money did improve his happiness for a time.
He's gone now. Complications from alcohol abuse.
In this (rare) case, the inheritance did improve his life.
Didn't totally transform it, but his last years were probably the happiest, finaly being able to express gratitude to his friends and family.
