Something I've been thinking about... This whole story could be "propaganda".

People tune in and feel empathy for a anonymous soldier who fell decades ago and then they're "reminded" that there's a war raging right now (that needs continued support from The West). It doesn't matter that he was a German soldier who may or may not have been an actual Nazi. Most of those were in the SS anyway so it's entirely possible this man did not believe in their ideals.

- What matters is that he was young and he was cut down in his prime serving his nation.
