Edit…as I looks at your son’s tank now on my iPad rather than phone, I can see the amount of live plants. Good job. To the extent your fish are alive without an actual filter, the plants are the reason why. It’s still important to at least have a sponge filter to give a good place for beneficial bacteria to reside and do their job
