maybe you can plug off any hoses from the tank and see if it can hold a bit of pressure, like 5 PSI or so. If it can't be pressurized at all due to a leak somewhere maybe a smoke test could help locate the air leak?
I think the charcoal canisters were required by law for pollution standards, I often wonder if my car needs one or if I could just chuck the thing. Im sure the racers must eliminate them as they are fairly heavy and do nothing for economy or performance, and they are basically trying to burn as much fuel as they can anyway ;-) I guess they help the overall environment if you realize the number of cars on the road, so follow your own conscience? old cars never needed all that crap but they exist for a good reason.
