Location: Placerville, CA.... You know, the only place on Highway 50 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe the you find signal lights. Above the fog most of the time and I can see the stars of the Milky Way 8 out of 10 nights. Kinda cool.....

Isn't it common practice to use landscaping fabric under the rock and up against the retainer?

Very true, still working on getting it up to scratch and airworthy again. Nothing major, just a bunch of little things. Waiting for an adapter for the new Allen fuel valve so it will mate up with the torque tube. It’s a day VFR flyer and I’m installing lights. Which means drilling a small hole/tube through a non-structural section of the wing. That requires experience in my book, so I’m planing on getting assistance from an ex-Scale Composites guy with that task.

On the wall, yes, fabric can be used and I have it in the build. Where I mussed up was when I initially built the wall, the gravel topped at two block runs below the top tier. When we were flooded and the water, mud and debris came rolling down the hill, it filled in the gap from the gravel and the top of the blocks. The fabric helped by preventing the muddy water from plugging up the whole draining e design. I placed mesh at the base and another run a few inches below grade in the gravel. Now I am attempting to dig down to the top layer before back filling.

Geo-grid or geo-mesh is another item that can be used to stabilize the hillside depending on the height and nature of the wall.
