Brings back memories. I had one get closer than that when I was out during a muzzle loading deer season. We were allowed to carry black powder sidearms, either single shot pistols or cap and ball revolvers. I had neither. The only thing I had was my .50 caliber flintlock round ball rifle. I soon purchased a Ruger Old Army cap and ball revolver.
Interestingly, this one (there have been several others) did not have his ears back, and did not appear aggressive in any way. I think he was just curious. I just started talking to him in a really calm, soothing voice. I remember his ears going up and his head twisting back and forth like a curious dog. This went on for about ten minutes, with this thing less than 20 feet away. I finally started telling him jokes. I think that's what drove him away.
