Garage

I remember pulling into "Sarge's Service Station" just outside of Maxwell AFB to get gas in my 1960 VW bug. They would come out, check the oil, in the mighty 36 HP engine. The check the air pressure in the bias ply recap tires that were constantly dropping pressure, there was no windshield washers fluid to check, but they would wash the windows. Hand me a bunch of green stamps for my mom, ask about the family by name. The bug had no gas gauge at all, so I drove until it sputtered, and flipped on the reserve tank lever and drove to get gas. So it was usually 9 gallons for a full tank, and I remember the outrage the first time it cost me THREE whole dollars for a fill up! Outrageous high price. And I just had to remember to be 100% certain I put the gas lever back in normal mode.

I remember the gas wars and buying gas at 19 cents per gallon.
