This discussion is a really interesting insight into the the common level of understanding related to tires and materials.
A modern street tire has 70+ distinct materials … each of them play a role. In totality, I would argue that a tire is the most advanced composite structure in terms of composition and use-case … non linear in regards to age, temperature, deformation rate and deformation amplitude.
The topic of aging is only partially about the tread and its traction attributes. From a safety perspective, the topic of rubber to belt or rubber to body ply adhesion is equally important and a significant contributor to the 10 year guidance.
I will not address spraying wd40 on your tires … unless you have any idea of what’s in the tread compound to begin with and the associated material science, you are operating in the realm of witchcraft.
