Got our daughter an '08 Mazda 3 for $500. Dude thought it was falling apart but only needed engine mounts. It was a great first car until she got t-boned by a Toyota pickup.
I'd say avoid the Audis that others have mentioned. Got a 2000 A4 3.0 for our son. It was too much car, held the road too well, and too powerful for a first car. He must have wrecked it 5 times before he finally had one wreck that I couldn't fix (that and the car / him were 2000 miles away at college)
They are both in Land Rover Discovery IIs now. Very slow but when purchased were cheap. Not so much cheap now though.
