Win-Win!

I don't see how QR codes make this significantly different than the existing bar codes. I also don't see how rebates and e-coupons would get processed properly. in a 100% self-checkout environment.
BTW, I understand that per the current Michigan law "...retailers are required to display the price of items offered for sale in the store at the place where the item is located, but they are no longer required to individually mark the price on the item itself. "
Also, lots of people don't carry around devices that can read QR codes, or don't want to fumble around pulling them out in stores.
But if you are thinking this is a win-win, don't forget to take into account the cost of security guards and significantly increased inventory loss. Oh, an it also requires that you have a reliable wi-fi or cell data connection available.
Talk to any of the retail outlets that have self-serve checkouts (e.g. Home Depot) and find out how much their inventory losses went up when they went to self-checkout, and how they had to reintroduce manned checkouts and checkout monitoring. Lots of people scanned only some of their items.
