The beginning of race day in Sebring, 1965 for the world famous 12 Hours Sebring began like just about any other typical March morning. Around 4 PM, the weather took a turn for the worse and foul weather started to threaten the drivers, cars and roughly 60,000 fans. Then at about 5:25 PM, the rain Gods unleashed a rain storm of almost biblical proportion, flooding the pits, race track, drivers reporting water in their cockpits up to their elbows.... This rain storm & race has been talked about ever since....but todays image pays homage & tribute to the fans who wouldn't quit & go home, or seek shelter.
The image was taken in the pits & is the # 67 Triumph Spitfire running in the GT1.3 class & driven by Ed Barker, Duane Feuerhelm, & Mike Rothchild. Amazing enough that they were able to complete the race & finish 33 laps behind the winning drivers Jim Hall & Hap Sharp in a Chaparral 2A, BUT, more amazing, is in the background are the amount of crazed hard core race fans Sebring has been known for decades.
