In the artistic vernacular it’s called ‘conceal and reveal’. This is why the more blatant imagery was (and still is in cognoscenti circles) considered vulgar.
The conceal part, when used effectively, stimulates more effectively than does the reveal part. Most of us, pretty much, knows, pretty much, what lies beneath. As such, it takes a small bit more of an effort to use one’s imagination to stimulate the hind-brain when there is concealment.
The snobbish amongst us will poo-poo the more animalistic amongst us because they like to think they know better. Truth is, the less snobbish among us are simply lazy.
