She was able to invoke "find my computer (or phone)" and her parents were quickly able to find their car.

They called the police, telling them what had happened, and explaining they had their car, in sight, as they were speaking. The 911 operator told them to stand down, not to engage, and to break off contact. They refused, and continued to follow their stolen vehicle. This went on for over an hour, with no response from police. They stayed on the phone with the dispatcher, who kept telling them to leave.

Eventually, the perps noticed they were being followed, and confronted the owners. Things got ugly. People (not the perps) got hurt. The police never responded. I'm not sure the vehicle was ever recovered.

So, well, good for you that the police actually responded. Many do not enjoy that luxury. Oh - and this was years before Seattle voted to defund the police.
Weird. Fortunately Oklahoma City police are here to protect and serve. Shortly after we moved into this house, some jerk deliberately drove his vehicle across our front yard, and trenched up the yard. I called the police just to file a report, in case it happened a second time, there would be a record. A cop showed up within minutes, took some photos, and said they have a few reports of similar damage, and are looking for the suspect. A very trivial event, and the cop said most likely the punk thought I a classmate lived here. We have no kids, so I guess the vandal figured it out as it never happened again.

One of my co-workers at a former job had his pickup stolen. He received a call at 2:00 AM that the truck was found, and he could come retrieve it in at the scariest intersection in town for a white man to go at 2:00 AM. The police said they would meet him there, and watch as he leaves with his truck. His brother drove him down there, and they were each wearing a pistol. The cops watched as he hot wired his own damaged truck, and drove it away.
