We would get one for my wife’s parents too.
I know this is doable with a raspberry pi. There has to be a tablet and app for this. Anyone know of one?

Much, simpler to use an Aura frame.

Easy user interface, good app for iOS, I suspect they do Android too.

Yes, we did the same for my Mom who lives in Florida while all of the grandkids are here in Texas. I think we got her the Aura Carver but they have several options. I think the cost for various frames range from $150-300. All of the frames include speakers so you can have photos and videos. (Videos will use far more storage).
The frames are on Wifi, so adding photos requires no cable, USB, etc... Internet is required
The Aura Carver is $150 on Amazon. It's a 10" screen.

We can all add pictures to her frame via a website. She can also easily add photos that get shared via text message to the frame. The frame does a slide show and has seems to have a fair amount of storage. I think the images are also "in the cloud" that probably then swap back and forth between the frame and the cloud, so the storage is actually greater than what's really on the frame itself.
We shipped the frame direct to my mom and she got it setup when it arrived. She's decent at tech stuff, but not an IT guru.
