Sounds like the rebuilder of the gearbox thought it was for a 911, and put the ring gear on the wrong side of the pinion gear. It's easy to do, especially if you build both 911 and 914 gearboxes.

The solution is to partly disassemble the gearbox and put the differential in the correct way. You'll very likely need new paper shims that go between the intermediate plate and the main transmission housing; measure them because it's very important to get the same thickness.


Note that the above assumes you still have a 914 transmission!! If you have a transmission from a 911, then you still have to flip the differential around but there may be other work you have to do to in order to accomplish that.
