I'm trying to get some work done on the Speedster in between all the other things that need to be done before the Nov 17. I have back surgery on 17 and the Doc says plan be pretty much out of commission for 3 months. Dave The Painter called and he's ready for the car! Vicki wants me to tune up her sewing machine and teach her how to use it! And it's fall - time to put the farm to bed for the winter! ACH!!
We're WAY past the point of no return now. I AM making progress.
The Speester's wiring is quite basic, but I took pictures and notes of where the wires go.
I'm using the the same notebook I used when Up-Fixin' the VW, just started "Chapte 2 - The Speedster Project" but I'm also taking pictures of each page. I lost the notebook or a couple of crucial months while putting the VW back together and having a backup would have saved a lot of heartache.
The side script on the Speedster has to come off every time you wax the car. There is just no way to thoroughly clean down in the cracks and crevices.
The script is supposed to be held on with those metal retaining clips that rust and have to be pried off, like on the ones on the old script at the top of the picture. Years ago I got smart and punched holes in squares of rubber to make retainers. Getting the script off was a piece of cake after that.
I'm having to make decisions about what to reuse and what to replace. I like to use original parts instead of repros whenever I can. These seat slides
should be chromed to reuse them, but one is pitted, two springs are missing, and all the springs need to be replaced. New springs alone are $10 each and I don't know what replating would cost. A set of new seat slides is $350.
The stalk on the turn signal switch needs to be rechromed. I don't think it can be rechromed without taking it off of the switch mechanism and there is no way I'm going to try to tackle that. I'm not sure how I'll handle that little problem.
This script goes on the dashboard. The plating is gold, with silver on the horizontal bars. It's real plated metal, not paint. The plating has been polished off of mine. You can buy new ones for $130 but I'm really skeptical about the quality of them. I'm looking into having it replated.
