They don't damage the paint. The plate pushes the spring loaded hood back so you can gas up your bike easier. For a guy like me with a gimpy hand it's a great aid. With it I can gas up with one hand and see the level of gas in my tank. Without it the nozzle extends too far into the tank and then I must use one hand to hold the hood back while the other uses the pump.
