Step 0: RTFR. Read The Rulebook. When building a "race car", this should always always always be the first thing you do.
My own autoX preferences have already been spelled out in a previous thread. The short version is, get the car into good working order, take all the junk out of the trunks and cockpit, over-fill by a half-quart of oil, and GO!! Worry about suspension modifications later, drive first.
As you can see, it's really easy to spend a boat-load of money on suspension mods if you feel the need. I don't think it's necessary, as a bone-stock 914 will provide you with a truly absurd amount of fun as-is!
