Turning off the radio to avoid punk is like trying to avoid being eaten by a shark by not taking a bath.
With the exception of a couple clash tunes, punk (the real stuff…if there is such a thing) was not and is still not played on the radio except college and Indy radio programs…unless you are someone who considers Blondie and Talking Heads punk because they too played CBGB. If there ever was an original punk, it was the killer, Jerry Lee that’s for sure. Punk, in the 70s, was nothing more than a return to basic DIY rock and roll in response to progressive rock and then disco. A revolution (a revolt against, not a presentation of something new) that was eventually and unfortunately consumed by fashion statements and spitting. The “punk” label, as a marketing strategy is tragic and unfortunate.
Wikipedia calls the MC5 a “rock” band. So are they punk? Not sure it matters….only reason it matters to me is it makes it easier to know where to start looking in the bins at the record store
