I’m not sure about other methods. Everyone said going through the front of the dash was the easiest and would stop the foam from blowing out the vents, give better heat and stop the AC from blowing on the bottom of the windshield (causing fogging).

So I followed the advice. Now no more problems

You may want to check out the following video. It looks like it's not actually 2 methods of fix (the one that you did OR the one via behind the radio. It looks like those two are actually fixing 2 different foam covered doors. I'm guessing one is the hot/cold/fresh air, and the other may be for which vents the air comes out inside the car.

This is in a 911, but I think it's similar. And the guy making this video, Yogi, sounds like Kurt Russel to me.

This was another video that I saw for the "via the trunk" method that is more boxster/cayman specific.
