All of the photos after the trail head sign (except the rusted motor) were taken in the Pololu valley.
Very VERY cool that your grandmother was born there!
It had the feeling of of a respected and revered place that has to be seen in person to appreciate. I'd encourage you to visit it if you are able, the deep connection you have will be rewarded.
From what I've read its one of the most ancient parts of the Big Island and the rounded lava rock from there was moved long distances by hand to build with by lining up groups of people "fire bucket brigade style"... wow those were some tough and strong folk.
We just got back from a couple weeks on the islands, stayed in Kona for a week and had this on our list of places to see again, alas- the winds and big waves were not favorable for the hike down to it.
It stays on my list of the most impactful and beautiful places I've ever been.
