I've tried that conversion with similar era of mtb, the reach is simply too long and low (compared to my road bike) that made them very uncomfortable to ride, combined with 26" wheel, quick steering,
the bike turned out to be more difficult to ride then need be.
A high-rise, short stem may solve most of the long/low reach problem, but you would still have the handling issue.
