All of our kitchen forks had a brown gunk embeded in the rough steel between the tongs it was gross and impossible to wash out. 50 year old food yummy. I took a file to them and wet sanded between to make them a smooth surface hopefully they will stay cleaner. It stunk too once it was disturbed.
