A few years ago, I bought 3 pairs of Smartwool brand socks, I think at a Whole Earth Provisions or maybe someplace similar to REI. I think one pair was for skiing and another was for hiking and I forget the purpose for the third. One pair is a normal crew length sock but they are extra thick down around the feet. Another pair seems pretty thick everywhere and go nearly to the knees, and the third pair is more of an ordinary crew sock. They are all great socks in the winter. If it's REALLY cold and I'm just sitting on my rear (not creating any warmth through activity), then I'm probably most likely to wear the tall ones. Having the warm up the calves is nice in a really cold situation.
