When I had my hip replaced, I had a temporary handicap placard for my rear view mirror. I used it for a short time until it was not painful enough, and I started parking at the far end of the lot again to avoid door dings.
One reason some people park in the handicap spots is they are nice and wide, and have enough room to avoid a door ding. One of my friends was retired Navy submariner and retired with a 60% disability. He got a handicap license tag, and loved parking up front. He was not very physically handicapped from what I could see, he was just one of those that liked to feel special. I have not seen him in many years.
